Data Controller
Narrow View is operated by the app developer ("we", "us"). By creating an account you enter into an agreement with us for the provision of the Narrow View cloud sync service.
Data We Collect
We collect the following personal data when you register and use the app:
• Email address and name — used for authentication only.
• Moorings, cruise logs and route plans — synced to our servers so you can access them across devices.
• User-submitted notes — notes you submit about canal points are stored and reviewed by our admin team before being published to all users.
• Location data — with your permission, used for the map, navigation and the community features described under "Location Data" below.
Location Data
With your permission, the app uses your device location to:
• Show your position and heading on the map and provide turn-by-turn navigation while cruising.
• Attach your last-known location to posts you create, so other boaters can filter the community feed by proximity. This location is stored only on our servers and is never shown to other users. The feed's minimum filter radius is 5 miles, so it cannot be used to work out a precise location. Posts made without a location fix are simply not distance-filtered.
Location is only accessed while you are using the app. You can turn off location access at any time in your device settings, though some features will then be unavailable. Deleting your account erases the location associated with your account and posts.
Purpose and Legal Basis
We process your personal data to provide the Narrow View cloud sync service. The legal basis under UK GDPR is contract — processing is necessary to deliver the service you have requested.
Data Retention
Your data is retained until you delete your account. You can delete your account at any time from within the app under Profile > Edit Profile > Delete Account (you'll confirm with your password and by typing DELETE). This permanently erases all your personal data, uploaded images and cloud-synced content from our servers and cannot be undone.
User-Submitted Notes
Notes you submit about canal points are reviewed by our admin team before being published to other users. Notes may be approved, rejected, or deleted at our discretion.
Your Rights (UK GDPR)
You have the right to:
• Access the personal data we hold about you.
• Rectify inaccurate data (update your name via your profile).
• Erasure ("right to be forgotten") — delete your account to erase all your data.
• Restrict or object to processing — contact us via the app.
• Lodge a complaint with the ICO (ico.org.uk).
Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent or share your personal data with any third parties. Approved notes you have submitted will be displayed to all app users attributed by your chosen display name only. Your location is never shared or displayed to other users — it is used only for the map and navigation, and for coarse (5 mile minimum) feed proximity filtering.
