Privacy Policy
Last updated: 8 July 2026
Narrow View ("we", "us", "our") provides a canal navigation app for narrowboaters, currently in beta. This policy explains what personal data we collect through the Narrow View app and website, why we collect it, and the rights you have over it.
Who we are
Narrow View is operated by an independent app developer based in the UK. We are the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. You can reach us at [email protected].
Data we collect
We collect the minimum data needed to run the app and its community features:
- Account details — email address, first/last name, and a username, used to create and authenticate your account.
- Profile content — an optional avatar photo, banner image, and status message you choose to add.
- Cruising data — moorings, cruise logs, saved routes and lock-time submissions you record in the app, synced to our servers so you can access them across devices.
- Community submissions — notes, community moorings, marker suggestions, diesel price reports, feedback, and reports you submit are stored and, where they're published to other users, reviewed by our admin team first.
- Social activity — posts, comments, likes, follows and the notifications these generate.
- Location — your device's GPS location is used live on your device to show your position, drive navigation and compass features, and log your cruise. We do not continuously track or store a history of your location on our servers beyond the cruise-log entries and moorings you choose to save.
- Beta interest — if you registered interest in the beta on our website, we hold your email address for that purpose only.
- Technical data — basic device/app version information sent with feedback reports, and standard web analytics (Google Analytics) on this website to measure how visitors reach us.
We do not collect payment information — Narrow View does not currently process any payments.
How we use your data
We use your data to:
- create and secure your account, and keep you signed in;
- sync your moorings, cruise logs, routes and settings across your devices;
- display community content (posts, notes, moorings, suggestions) to other users, attributed to your chosen username;
- send you in-app notifications about activity relevant to you (comments, follows, approvals);
- moderate submissions and respond to reports and feedback;
- understand how our website is used, so we can improve it.
Legal basis
Under UK GDPR, we process most of your data on the basis of contract — it's necessary to provide the account and cloud-sync service you've signed up for. Where you submit content voluntarily (notes, posts, suggestions), the basis is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time by deleting that content or your account. Website analytics are used on the basis of our legitimate interest in understanding site usage.
Where your data is stored
Narrow View's backend and image storage run on Cloudflare's infrastructure. Data may be processed in data centres outside the UK/EEA as part of Cloudflare's global network; Cloudflare provides appropriate safeguards for international transfers under UK GDPR.
Sharing your data
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties for marketing purposes. Content you choose to publish — posts, comments, approved notes, community moorings, marker suggestions — is visible to other Narrow View users, attributed by your username and (if set) avatar. We may share data with law enforcement or regulators where we're legally required to.
Data retention
We keep your data for as long as your account is active. You can delete your account at any time from Profile → Delete account in the app, which permanently erases your personal data and cloud-synced content from our servers. Beta-interest emails are kept only until the beta invite is sent or you ask us to remove them.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR, you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you;
- Rectify inaccurate data (update your name and profile directly in the app);
- Erasure — delete your account to erase your data ("right to be forgotten");
- Restrict or object to certain processing;
- Data portability — request a copy of your data in a portable format;
- Lodge a complaint with the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Children's privacy
Narrow View is not directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect data from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we'll remove it.
Cookies & analytics
Our website uses Google Analytics/Ads cookies to measure traffic and ad performance. The app itself does not use tracking cookies; it stores your login session and preferences locally on your device.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app develops out of beta. We'll update the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, notify you in the app.
